Caviar Tips
With great excitement, you may have brought home a jar of caviar only to discover that you had waited for far too long to open it. Similarly, even serving caviar is an art and knowing how to do it just right, will win you handsome praise. Let us look at some tips on how to store and serve caviar.
Storing Caviar
• Since caviar is highly perishable, it is very important to store it properly. An unopened jar of fresh caviar can stay fresh for up to four weeks from the day of purchase. Once you open a jar or tin, the caviar must be consumed within two to three days.
• Ideally, caviar should be stored at about 28 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. However, ordinary household refrigerators do not reach this temperature. It is therefore best if the caviar is stored in the coldest part of the refrigerator, which is typically the meat compartment. Never store the caviar in the freezer! This will not only affect its flavor but also destroy the delicate texture.
• Once you open a tin or can, you can reduce the amount of exposure to air by wrapping the caviar container tightly with plastic before returning it to the refrigerator.
Serving Caviar
• On the day you would like to serve your caviar, remove the caviar jar or can from the refrigerator and let it stand for about ten minutes or so, at room temperature, before you would like to serve it. Open the lid of the can or jar just before you want to serve it.
• You can now transfer the caviar to small bowls that have been kept on crushed ice to help prolong the freshness of the caviar. You can find a variety of small decorative caviar presenters today that are used to serve caviar.
• There is no problem in eating caviar with metal spoons. However, as any caviar lover will tell you, psychologically, nothing is more satisfying than eating caviar with the traditional caviar spoons made from mother of pearl.
• Caviar is loved both for its delicate texture as well as its delicate flavor. As such, it has to be served with accompaniments that do not completely overwhelm this delicate flavor. Simple accompaniments are the best. You could serve small pancakes called blinis, sour cream, small pieces of toast or unsalted crackers. Traditionally, cold vodka or champagne is served with caviar.
